The HumanKind Lynchburg Turkey Trot, presented by Scott Insurance, has become a beloved community tradition that brings families, friends, neighbors, and coworkers together for a shared purpose: supporting local individuals and families while celebrating the spirit of gratitude. As the event returns for its 38th year on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2026, participants once again have the opportunity to run, walk, and give back.

Known as the largest 5K in the Lynchburg area, the Turkey Trot welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. Whether you're an experienced runner chasing a personal best, a family looking for a fun Thanksgiving activity, or someone who simply wants to support a great cause, this event offers a meaningful way to start the holiday. Participants can choose between the traditional in-person race in Lynchburg or a virtual option that allows them to complete their 5K from anywhere between Nov. 21 and 29.
The event's roots stretch back to 1988 when Don Lucy, who grew up at Presbyterian Homes, now known as HumanKind, created the race. What started as a simple act of generosity has grown into one of Lynchburg's most anticipated holiday traditions, attracting thousands of participants and supporters each year.
But what truly sets the Lynchburg Turkey Trot apart is its purpose. Every registration helps support HumanKind's programs and services, which work to stabilize families and remove barriers to opportunity for individuals and families across Virginia. The race serves as a reminder that when a community comes together, it can create lasting impact!
The in-person event begins at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, with the start and finish line located in front of E.C. Glass High School on Langhorne Road. Participants are encouraged to bring their "flock," dress in festive costumes, and embrace the fun atmosphere that has become a hallmark of race day. For those who cannot attend in person, the virtual race ensures everyone can be part of the tradition, no matter where they are celebrating Thanksgiving.
Each registration includes commemorative race gear, a race bib, finisher medal, and special event flair, making the experience memorable long after the finish line is crossed. Participants can even invite family members, friends, or coworkers to register together and enjoy discounted group pricing.
