HR Basics & Common Pitfalls: A Practical Guide for Small Business Owners & Entrepreneurs

Most small businesses don't think about HR until something goes wrong — a misclassified worker, a handbook that doesn't hold up, an employee dispute with no paper trail. This workshop is designed to get ahead of that.

We will work through:

• HR Foundations — worker classification and compliance basics with Virginia-specific thresholds and numbers
• HR Beyond Compliance — the pieces most small business owners haven't gotten to yet
• Common Pitfalls — the mistakes that cost small businesses the most in time, money, and legal exposure
• Your Roadmap — growth thresholds to watch, when to bring in outside help, and a self-audit checklist to take home

We will start with a short self-assessment to identify where your business stands today and leave with a personalized action plan connecting gaps to real next steps.
