SUMMARY:Archaeology @ Natural Bridge's Historic Barger Cabin
DESCRIPTION:The first professional archaeology undertaken on Natural Bridge property begins with an exploration of the structures and site which define the evolving historic tourist wonder. This work is an outgrowth of the survey and planning study -- sponsored by the VA Department of historical Resources -- recently completed at the proposed NATURAL BRIDGE HISTORIC DISTRICT. Archaeological exploration is the next logical step to improve understanding of this significant historic district. It promises to shed light on both archaeological (buried) cultural resources and to facilitate interpretation of structures with respect to dates of occupation\, function\, and lifeways. \n\n\n\nThe general public is invited to stop by the Barger Cabin from 10am until 5pm on the day of the work to observe\, free of charge\, the site survey and excavations. On-site interpreters will discuss the history of the site as well as the goals of the work. To learn how you can participate in this event contact Kurt C. Russ (contact information below).\n\n\n\nSeveral extant log buildings are located within the proposed NATURAL BRIDGE HISTORIC DISTRICT. In May of 2015\, the search to document these building\, including Jefferson's log cabin\, will begin. The first structure to be investigated archaeologically will be the Barger cabin. \n\n\n\nKurt C.
