SUMMARY:Lunchbox Lecture- Battle of the Atlantic 1942-1944
DESCRIPTION:Captain James "Jim" Ransom\, a retired U.S. Navy submariner\, former faculty member of the U.S. Naval War College\, and member of the National D-Day Memorial's Board of Directors\, will speak on the Battle of the Atlantic\, and how it affected the transport of the millions of U.S. troops during the years 1942 to 1944. Winston Churchill said that 'the only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.' To examine that statement\, the presentation will focus on the ferocious fight for control of the trans-Atlantic sea lanes between U.S. and Allied maritime and air forces\, and the hundreds of German submarines who fought to close them. The presentation will also discuss the experience of the Allied soldiers as they were transported across U-boat infested waters to participate in Operations Torch and Husky\, and to stage and train for Operation Overlord. Guests are welcome to bring their lunch. Admission is free though donations are appreciated and will help support future educational programming.
