$100,000 grant approved for Central Virginia Training Center redevelopment plan

View full story at ABC 13 - The Central Virginia Training Center could soon get a face lift. The GO Virginia Region 2 Council approved the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance’s project for the Central Virginia Training Center Redevelopment Plan. The grant requested $100,000 to assist in the cost of a redevelopment plan for the site located in Amherst County.

The Central Virginia Planning District Commission, the County of Amherst, and the Amherst County Economic Development Authority all provided matching funds for the grant request.

“On behalf of the Alliance, we are pleased that the GO Virginia Region 2 Council voted to approve our application for CVTC. This grant is critical in assisting to fund the master redevelopment plan for the Central Virginia Training Center property. This regional asset located in Amherst County has significant economic potential and is deserving of a focused effort to evaluate its long-term highest and best use”, said Todd Hall, Chairman of the Alliance Board of Directors in a press release.

The Central Virginia Training Center is scheduled for closure in 2020. The 350-acre site has 98 structures in various condition. The Alliance and partners in Amherst County have been aggressively working to secure a plan for the facility upon closure and will collaboratively complete a redevelopment plan that will use data collection, analytics, GIS data, public engagement, and design workshops to ensure the economic prosperity of the site and the citizens of the Lynchburg region. At full operation the Central Virginia Training Center had an $87 million economic impact on the region.

Calvin Kennon, chairman of the Economic Development Authority of Amherst County said in a press release, "we are thankful for the $100,000 in funding and we hope we can gain full support for the redevelopment in the future. The CVTC closure has had a negative impact on Amherst County and the region and we hope that we can get the study completed so we can redevelop the property as soon as possible. This property sitting empty for any length of time will not age well and be a hardship for our community."

The Alliance and partners will continue to look for opportunities through additional grants and private-sector support to fully fund the redevelopment plan for completion by June 2020.
