Centra Health will be expanding its forensic department to more directly serve patients in Pittsylvania County, Halifax County and Danville who have suffered through domestic assault, sexual assault and other crime-related traumas.
Currently, patients living in Centra’s Danville service area can come to the Gretna Medical Center and receive transportation to Lynchburg General Hospital to be seen by a forensic nurse examiner for sexual assault cases. Part of those transportation costs are paid for by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund, while Centra pays for the remainder, according to Forensic Nursing Program Coordinator April Rasmussen.
“Most of the people in that area just didn’t have the resources to be able to drive that far,” she said.
