BEDFORD — Thousands of people will arrive in the area this week to observe the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy.

Angela Lynch — the National D-Day Memorial Foundation’s associate director of marketing — said between 15,000 and 20,000 people are expected to visit Bedford on Thursday to attend the 75th anniversary of the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion.

Lynch said Thursday’s ceremony is expected to draw the largest crowd since the memorial was dedicated in 2001 — which drew about 15,000 people and was attended by then-President George W. Bush.

“We have been busy for some time getting ready for this,” Lynch said. “There are events going on all this week at the D-Day Memorial and throughout the area, so we will be busy through Sunday.”
