WHO: FREE community event celebrating World Breast Feeding Month and the success we have
achieved together as a community! Community members, families and children of all ages are
welcome!

WHAT: Milkapalooza: 3rd Annual Community Breastfeeding Celebration presented by Member One Federal Credit Union!! Come enjoy live music, 9 food trucks, bounce houses, balloons
by Teddy Spaghetti, Nature Zone, face painting, a petting zoo and games represented by over 30
community partners. This collaboration between The Motherhood Collective, HumanKind, Centra, and Live Healthy Lynchburg celebrates breastfeeding success and increase public breastfeeding awareness.

HIGHLIGHTS: The State Breastfeeding Coordinator from the Virginia Department of Health,
Jarene Fleming, will be joining us and bringing a proclamation from Governor Northam’s office
recognizing August as Breastfeeding Awareness Month in the Commonwealth and the
importance events like Milkapalooza have on the health of our communities. This proclamation
will be shared alongside the community Latch-On / Splash-On at 12:00 PM.

Jarene Fleming, State Breastfeeding Coordinator for Virginia
As the State Breastfeeding Coordinator with the Office of Family Health Services,
Division of Community Nutrition, she coordinates multiple initiatives to promote, protect
and support human milk feeding in the Commonwealth; including the Virginia WIC
Breastfeeding Program, the Virginia Maternity Care Quality Improvement Collaborative,
and the Virginia Breastfeeding Friendly Designation Program. Making a positive impact
in the area of maternal and infant health through breastfeeding is her passion. Her
particular focus is closing the racial health disparity gap by promoting breastfeeding for
all families. Jarene is an active La Leche League Leader and serves on the Board of
the Southern Birth Justice Network. She is a member of Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE), and the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA).
