The July 4th Independence Day program at Patrick Henry’s Red Hill has been a tradition since 1976 (43 years). This is a community event bringing families and neighbors together to celebrate our nation's birthday. This event also brings visitors from around the nation to Red Hill. This family friendly event emphasizes family values while imparting the principle of freedom and liberty on which our democracy was founded. Patrick Henry's Red Hill is where Patrick Henry spent the last five years of his life and he is buried here in the family cemetery. The Independence Day program serves not only as a celebration of America but as a tool to educate people about Patrick Henry, his life and 18th century living.

Last year 2,500 people from all over Virginia as well as people from 16 other states attended this event. This year visitors can tour the buildings, museum and visitor center, take part in the living history demonstrations such as blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, and colonial medicine, 18th century games, they can enjoy some delicious food from the Charlotte County Lions, Sonny Bucks Diner, the Taco Wagon, Clark Boys kettle corn and cotton candy, and Chill City Pops. This year the band playing is BoZac, a Classic Country Duo featuring a unique blend of country music with some twists thrown in!

Patrick Henry will be on the grounds, portrayed by his 5th great grandson. The crowd gathers around to hear him deliver the famous "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" speech. The day concludes with everyone looking skyward for the dazzling 20+ minute fireworks show underneath the vast night sky.

This year there is a VIP opportunity at the newly built Eugene B. Casey Education and Event Center. From 8:30 pm until fireworks time the VIP ticket holders can eat cake, provided by Connie Halsey of Layers of Love, and ice cream from The Scoop in Charlotte Court House, sponsored by Watts Auction Realty Appraisals Inc. These tickets are $5 each (ages 2 and up) and include cake and ice cream with Patrick Henry and watching the fireworks on the patio or inside the building – your choice. Tickets can only be purchased the day of the event at the Red Hill information tent on the grounds. There is a limited number of tickets so get yours early!
