University of Lynchburg’s undergraduate commencement speaker will be the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, which was closed to women at the time.

The university announced Tuesday Kathrine Switzer, who attended and ran track at Lynchburg College in the mid 1960s before transferring to Syracuse University to study journalism, will speak to about 400 University of Lynchburg students during the May 18 undergraduate ceremony.

While at Lynchburg, Switzer joined the men’s track team. There was no team for women.
