After more than an hour and a half of heated discussion, Lynchburg City Council voted 5-2 to approve $4.13 million in funding for the Florida Avenue sidewalk project in the fiscal year 2020 Capital Improvement Plan budget. Ward III Councilman Jeff Helgeson and Ward IV Councilman Turner Perrow voted in opposition.

The proposed sidewalk project on Florida Avenue had become a lightning rod in the community in recent weeks, with city administrators on one side and at least one city council member and the Lynchburg Fire Fighters Association on the other after the association and Helgeson questioned the expenditure, which totals $9.9 million over 10 years.
