Lecture by Jeffrey Allison, Paul Mellon Collection Educator & Statewide Programs Coordinator, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts The photographer Walker Evans and painter Edward Hopper were part of the generation of American artists who distinguished themselves from European artists at the start of the 20th century. Join Jeffrey Allison as he explores these artists who celebrated America without filter, focusing on common people in common lives and places. Within those scenes lie a powerful silence in which directness creates a visual anxiety as we wonder what has just happened and what will happen next. Refreshments provided. This event is free and open to the public. Edward Hopper's oil painting, "Mrs. Scott's House," 1932, and Walker Evans' photograph, "Flood Refugees," 1937, are a part of the Randolph College collection at the Maier Museum of Art. This program has been organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is supported, in part, by the Paul Mellon Endowment and the Jean Stafford Camp Memorial Fund.
