Liberty University’s Center for Law and Government announces Constitution Week
September 18, 2017 through September 22, 2017
The Center for Law and Government is pleased to announce that it will host the first annual Constitution Week at Liberty University beginning Monday, September 18, 2017 through Friday, September 22, 2017. The week-long program will include an exhibit at the Jerry Falwell Library and a series of moderated panel discussions about the Constitution on Wednesday and Thursday in the Montview Ballroom. The week will conclude Friday morning with a discussion about the Constitution at Convocation with U.S. Senator Tim Scott and U.S. Representative Trey Gowdy. All of the events are free and the public and media are invited to attend.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 20, the program will begin with a presentation by Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson of U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals to discuss his latest book “All Falling Faiths.” Then on Wednesday evening, U.S. Representative Bob Goodlatte (VA-6) and Judge Steve Agee of the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals will be joined by former Congressman Robert Hurt to discuss the powers and limitations of the Judicial Branch as outlined in Article 3 of the U.S. Constitution.
On the afternoon of Thursday, September 21, the program will continue with two panels moderated by Congressman Hurt with former Press Secretary to President Bill Clinton Mike McCurry and former Special Assistant to President George W. Bush Tim Goeglein and then with former Deputy Campaign Manager for Donald Trump David Bossie to discuss the powers and limitations of the Executive Branch as outlined in Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution.
On Thursday evening, the program will continue with a final panel moderated by Congressman Hurt with U.S. Senator Tim Scott (SC) and U.S. Representative Trey Gowdy (SC-4) to discuss the powers and limitations of the Legislative Branch as outlined in Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution. There will be a reception following this panel celebrating the occasion of the 230th year since the adoption of our U.S. Constitution.
On the morning of Friday, September 22, Senator Scott and Representative Gowdy will visit with all Liberty University students at Convocation.
A full schedule of events is available at Liberty University’s Center for Law & Government website at www.liberty.edu/clg.
Former Congressman and Director of the Center for Law & Government, Robert Hurt said: “The Center for Law & Government is pleased to be able to host Liberty’s first-ever Constitution Week with such an excellent line-up of guests -- each of whom who will bring a compelling and important perspective to our week-long appraisal of the enduring power of our foundational document. It is our hope that this series of events will be useful to our students and the public in better understanding the fundamental principles upon which our great nation was founded."
