Kukuli Velarde is a Peruvian artist with American citizenship who lives and works in Philadelphia. In recent years, her creative output has developed along two tracks: one involving life size self-portrait paintings on aluminum plates, and another consisting of ceramic sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian imagery, a series she has entitled Plunder Me Baby. Velarde has said, "I like my work to be emphatic and share intimacy with the audience. Overt communication makes us vulnerable yet it may strengthen interaction and deepen bonds. I do not mind becoming ‘vulnerable’ if in the process common grounds are established and a relationship is created with the viewer."
In 2013, Randolph College acquired Velarde’s 'Letter to My Father,' which was one of four of her works included in the Maier Museum’s 101st Annual Exhibition: 'Bridges Not Walls.' The purchase of Letter to My Father was made possible by the Estate of Bethea Scott Owen in memory of her sister Helen Owen Calvert ’93.
Reception with refreshments to follow lecture. This event is free and open to the public.
This year’s Outten Visiting Artist is supported by the Outten Visiting Artist Fund and Nancy Forsyth Sykes ’98.
