On Friday, March 7, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., the Lynchburg Museum will be open for a special Roaring Lynchburg Speakeasy Event, featuring live music by the Lew Taylor jazz trio, Charleston dancing, 1920’s costume contest with prizes, period mocktails, a photo booth, and a few surprises! Attendees are encouraged to dress in their 1920’s best. Admission to the event is $5 per person. Tickets can be purchased at LynchburgMuseum.org/calendar or at the door. 
This speakeasy event is in conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibit, “Roaring Lynchburg: Social Life in 1925.” Step back in time to view life in the Hill City 100 years ago. In 1925, Lynchburg had a bustling population of around 30,000 and an economy built on tobacco, railroads, and manufacturing. Just like today, once residents were finished with their work, it was time to unwind and socialize. While the lights were bright to entice patrons on major thoroughfares, Prohibition led some people to secret corner speakeasies. The entertainment scene was booming with local and international performers. Social clubs, dances, sports, and recreational activities filled public and private spaces across our seven hills. Discover how the city’s diverse population navigated the social landscape of 1925.
The exhibit will remain on display at the Lynchburg Museum (901 Court Street) through March 31. Admission is always free. See LynchburgMuseum.org for open days and hours, as well as other special events, programs, and guided tours throughout the year.

The Lynchburg Museum System manages the official history museums and archives of the City of Lynchburg. Its mission is to collect, interpret, preserve, and share the history and culture of Lynchburg, Virginia, and the surrounding area. The Museum System is a division of the City’s Office of Economic Development & Tourism, working in partnership with the non-profit Lynchburg Museum Foundation.
 
The Museum System is responsible for operating two museums: the Lynchburg Museum in the Old Court House at the top of Monument Terrace and Point of Honor, the former plantation site on Daniel’s Hill. These museums preserve nearly 100,000 artifacts and share the diverse stories of three centuries of local history with residents, tourists, and students of all ages.
