Point of Honor Candlelight Tours
Have you ever wanted to explore Point of Honor by candlelight? Now’s your chance! On Friday
and Saturday, November 2 and 3, the Lynchburg Museum System will present A Point in
History, special nighttime tours of Point of Honor, 112 Cabell Street. The theme of this year’s
tour is “The Civil War at Home – Life at Point of Honor, 1862-1865.”
During the Civil War, Point of Honor was owned by Robert Owen and his wife Narcissa, who
was the daughter of Thomas Chisholm, the last hereditary war chief of the Western Cherokee.
The Owens resided at Point of Honor with their two sons from 1862 until 1870. They left Point
of Honor when Robert Owen was forced to resign from his position as president of the Virginia
and Tennessee Railroad.
Tickets for A Point in History are $5 per person, sold on a first come first sever basis. Tours will
be offered every half hour beginning at 5:00 p.m. with the last tour starting at 8:00 p.m. both
evenings, with a maximum of 12 people per tour. In addition to exploring the house, tour
participants can make their own hand dipped candle and enjoy refreshments in the Carriage
House. Advance tickets may be purchased at the Point of Honor Gift Shop (112 Norwood Street)
and at the Lynchburg Museum (901 Court Street).
Point of Honor was built in 1815 by the Cabell family. It has been beautifully restored and is
now a Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. The house and
grounds are part of the Lynchburg Museum System which also includes the Lynchburg Museum
at the Old Court House.
