Unleashing Housing: Free-Market Solutions for Housing

America is in the midst of a housing crisis and is one driven not by a lack of innovation or demand, but by outdated zoning laws, overregulation, and artificial supply constraints. It is time to rethink how we build.
The Mercatus Center is a free market 501(c)(3) based out of George Mason University's graduate campus. Emily Hamilton, who is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Urbanity Project at Mercatus, focuses in her work on policies that state legislators can enact to increase housing affordability through expanding the housing supply. In order to address skyrocketing housing prices in Virginia, Emily has done much work with Virginia legislators to provide feedback on a variety of bills that would deregulate land use, including ones that would enable ADU construction, residential housing in commercial zones, and churches and nonprofits to build housing on their land.
Join the Mercatus Institute and Americans for Prosperity for a high-impact policy forum bringing together state and local policymakers, housing developers, and free-market advocates to explore bold, evidence-based strategies for housing reform. Learn how smart deregulation, streamlined permitting, and market-driven development can unleash new housing opportunities, reduce costs, and drive economic growth without relying on subsidies or mandates.
