OF THE 2025 LAUNCH LYH PITCH COMPETITION
$100,000 in cash grants awarded to support small business startups and expansions in Downtown Lynchburg

 
Lynchburg, VA – Downtown Lynchburg Association is thrilled to announce the winners of its third and final Launch LYH pitch competition. This innovative program fosters economic growth and revitalizes the heart of Lynchburg by supporting promising entrepreneurs eager to start, relocate, or expand their businesses in Downtown Lynchburg. All winning businesses will open or expand their businesses in Downtown Lynchburg within the next 18 months.
 
Selected applicants participated in a comprehensive eight-week educational course, provided by the Small Business Development Center – Lynchburg Region. Participants then submitted business plans and presented their concepts at a competitive pitch night event. A panel of local business experts chose the winning concepts based on their innovative ideas, strong business models, and demonstrated commitment to contributing to the vibrancy of Lynchburg's business community. The total grant funds of $100,000 were divided equally among the winners.
 
The esteemed winners of the 2025 Launch LYH Pitch Competition are:
 

  • Scrappy Elephant
    Crafters and eco-conscious creatives will find an ever-changing inventory of gently used and new art supplies, all rescued from the landfill and offered at affordable prices. This creative reuse center will promote sustainable living by encouraging upcycling and participation in the circular economy. Through shopping, donating, or attending events, the community will be able to reimagine waste and give discarded materials new purpose.
 
  • LaneyKickz
    Sneakerheads and vintage lovers will discover a high-energy retail space stocked with affordable sneakers, vintage clothing, and accessories. With a focus on curated style and community connection, LaneyKickz will offer an inclusive shopping experience where customers can express themselves without the pressure of high resale prices. It will become a go-to destination in Downtown Lynchburg for fashion-forward finds and laid-back vibes.
 
  • Cast Iron Pizza
    Pizza lovers will enjoy a bold twist on tradition with pies baked in cast iron pans, combining the crispy crust of Detroit-style with the airy interior of Sicilian pizza. With generous toppings, crave-worthy flavor, and affordable pricing made possible by its simple production model, Cast Iron Pizza will bring a satisfying, no-fuss approach to gourmet pizza right to the heart of the community.
 
  • Needle Ninja
    Aspiring and experienced sewists alike will be able to participate in hands-on classes ranging from beginner to expert level, while also enjoying access to open studio time and rentable equipment. With a focus on skill-building and creative expression, Needle Ninja will provide a welcoming space for individuals to learn, create, and connect through the art of sewing and needlework. A curated shop of fabrics and materials will round out the experience for makers of all kinds.
 
  • Dimora
    Design enthusiasts and homeowners will be able to explore a beautifully curated selection of home décor items, including handmade candles, pottery, linens, and pillows. Shoppers will also have access to on-site interior design and architectural services, all offered in one stylish Downtown Lynchburg storefront. By blending high-quality products from local and global makers with expert design consultations, Dimora will provide a one-of-a-kind experience for those looking to elevate their living spaces.
 
Each winner will also receive a Launch LYH Prize Package, which includes valuable resources from our partner organizations, designed to further support their entrepreneurial journey.
 
Special consideration during the competition was given to SWaM (Small, Women-owned, and Minority-owned) businesses, as part of our steadfast commitment to promote diversity and inclusivity within Lynchburg's business landscape.
 
This program was made possible through a Community Business Launch grant awarded by the Virginia Department of Community and Housing Development, and by our Launch LYH sponsors: Bank of the James; the City of Lynchburg Office of Economic Development & Tourism; Moore & Giles, the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation; and the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance.

The Community Business Launch (CBL) is a place-based entrepreneurial development strategy that fills a critical mass of vacant storefronts with expansion or start-up ventures. Local CBL programs train entrepreneurs, creatives, and small business owners about business planning practices. This training culminates in a group of finalists pitching their ideas to a panel of judges, with winners receiving grant funding and support services from the community to kick-start their new venture.
