FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

H&P Selected for Engineering & Site Design Services in Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital Expansion

BLACKSBURG, VA – 9/19/2025 – H&P (Hurt & Proffitt), a leading employee-owned engineering and surveying firm headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia, has been selected to provide engineering, surveying, and environmental services for the upcoming renovation and expansion of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Virginia–Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) on Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus working as a partner with Page, now Stantec, architecture & engineering.

The project represents a major investment in veterinary education, research, and clinical care, addressing the growing demand for advanced facilities. Originally built in 1987, the current hospital is undersized for its caseload of 13,000 small-animal visits and nearly 2,000 overnight stays annually.

The expansion will add approximately 25,000–32,000 square feet of new space and renovate another 25,000 square feet, for a total project size of 50,000–57,000 gross square feet. With an estimated construction budget of $32 million, the new facilities will provide expanded animal ICU, operating rooms, diagnostic and imaging space, and enhanced areas for teaching and student training.

H&P’s contributions to the project include:
- Topographic and utility survey field work
- Environmental impact reporting
- Site design and stormwater management planning

“These improvements will significantly strengthen the hospital’s ability to serve animals of the region while advancing hands-on learning for students,” said Bif Johnson, P.E., CEO of H&P. “As many of us are alumni, we are proud to support Virginia Tech in its mission to prepare the next generation of veterinary professionals and advance clinical research.”

Scott V. Cramer, Project Manager – Land Development H&P, added: “We’re excited to again be working with Page on this important project, and to continue our long-standing relationship with Virginia Tech for capital construction projects and campus site development.”

Planning funding authorization for design and working drawings was approved by Virginia Tech in August 2024, funded through non-general funds. Architectural and engineering design services are underway, with construction timelines to be finalized pending funding approvals.

Once complete, the expansion will enable:
-
Increased exam, operating, and critical care capacity.
- Improved physical therapy, rehabilitation, pharmacy, and diagnostic spaces.
- Dedicated community practice and specialty suites.
- Enhanced facilities for hands-on student training and clinical research.
