H&P to Assist Another Virginia Small Town with Flood Preparedness
The Town of Wytheville has experienced multiple significant flooding events since 2018, with documented damage to commercial and residential properties
WYTHEVILLE, VA – 3/30/2026 – H&P (Hurt & Proffitt), with offices in Wytheville and across Virginia, has been selected to conduct a comprehensive townwide drainage study for the Town of Wytheville – funded through a $450,000 award from the Virginia Community Flood Preparedness Fund, with a $50,000 local match bringing the total project investment to $500,000.The study will evaluate existing flood conditions, identify vulnerabilities, and develop strategies to better protect residents, infrastructure, and public assets from future flooding events.
As the western portions of the Commonwealth continue to repair devastating damages from
Hurricane Helene, this study will be one of the most thorough evaluations of Wytheville’s
stormwater system ever undertaken. H&P’s scope of work includes:
•Developing a drainage and stormwater inventory of both public and private infrastructure
•Delineating watershed basins within the town and mapping upland stormwater source
locations
•Documenting historical flooding context, drawing on four major flood events since 2018
•Identifying and prioritizing problem areas across residential neighborhoods, commercial
corridors, and gateway areas where flooding disrupts daily life and economic activity
•Developing actionable mitigation strategies
•Educating the public
The result will be a roadmap that positions Wytheville to pursue future capital improvement
projects and pursue additional state and federal mitigation funding.
“Wytheville has shown a real commitment to understanding the root causes of its flooding
challenges, and that’s exactly what this study is designed to address,” said Jessica Littlejohn, PE, Vice President “We’ll be doing the technical groundwork – inventorying the system, mapping the basins, and identifying where investment will have the greatest impact. H&P is proud to put our local expertise and engineering depth to work for this community.”
H&P’s Wytheville office is ideally positioned to lead this effort, with deep familiarity with the town’s terrain, drainage patterns, and the infrastructure challenges that have persisted for years across multiple neighborhoods. The study will lay the technical groundwork for the Town to develop a formal resiliency plan and pursue construction-level funding in future CFPF grant rounds. The project comes as Southwest Virginia continues its recovery from Hurricane Helene’s September 2024 devastation – which prompted a federal disaster declaration for Wythe County – underscoring the urgency of long-term flood preparedness planning across the region. This project received funding from Department of Conservation and Recreation #CFPF-25-05-25.
