HumanKind receives approval to expand Early Head Start center in Lynchburg
Currently, 48 children and their families are served there and that number will almost double to 90 with the expansion. Having access to high-quality child care without the barriers of cost will help more than 300 family members pursue their goals for work, education and economic stability, a news release states.
Central Virginia is considered a child care desert, where many families cannot find quality, affordable care. Nearly 1,800 children younger than age 5 in Lynchburg don’t have access to early education programs.
“Every family is asked about their goals. That’s often a pivot point — from surviving to thriving. We look at the whole picture and partner with families for what is often a life-changing journey,” Holli Relyea, HumanKind’s EHS director, said in the release.
Head Start is operated by Lynchburg Community Action Group (Lyn-CAG) and serves children 3 to 4 years of age.
It also states that they have a higher likelihood of graduating high school, attending college and receiving a postsecondary degree, and are less likely to be unemployed and in poor health as adults.
