Local teachers can apply for a grant, up to $500, to assist with classroom projects that positively impact students. “Teachers, on average, spend $500 out of their own pockets each year for classroom supplies and projects. Our Blue Eagle Credit Union team believes in education and that funding creative learning is important to the success of the students. Employees can opt to wear jeans on Fridays for a $2 donation to our Teacher Grant Program. That small donation each week adds up. Since 2016, we’ve given more than $42,000 in grants to local teachers, funded entirely by our staff,” shares Laurissa Thompson, Senior Brand Specialist of Blue Eagle Credit Union.

The Blue Eagle Credit Union Teacher Grant application window opens each fall for teachers in Roanoke, Lynchburg, and the surrounding areas. Applications are being accepted now through October 31, 2024. Recipients will be announced in early November. In 2023, 10 local teachers received a combined $4,150 for classroom projects that impacted more than 1,700 students. Some projects will benefit students in years to come as well, multiplying the positive impact. To date, nearly 100 teachers have received more than $42,000.

In the past teachers have used their $500 to fund projects like escape room activities related to geography that utilizes problem-solving skills, a class that bakes treats for underserved children living at the Rescue Mission, and purchasing desiccators to prolong the shelf life of chemicals used in classroom experiments.
