ALTAVISTA, VIRGINIA (January 10, 2025) – The town of Altavista announced today plans for a new distribution center. The Altavista Economic Development Authority (AEDA) will convey the land to Becknell Industrial to build the facility, assessed at $414,600, showcasing the town's commitment to fostering economic growth.
 
The 260,000 square foot facility represents a capital investment of $37 million by Becknell Industrial to construct the distribution center. Upon completion, the facility will be leased to Abbott, the global healthcare company which currently has a manufacturing facility within Altavista. Upon completion, the facility is expected to generate 30 new permanent full-time jobs. Construction is scheduled to begin immediately and is expected to finish by June 30, 2026.

AEDA Chairman Bill Gillespie expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying: "The AEDA is thrilled to work alongside Becknell in bringing this new distribution center to Altavista. I would also like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to my fellow EDA members, as well as the Altavista Town Council, for their ongoing support throughout this process."
 
Former Mayor Mike Mattox worked diligently on this project in 2024, and he expressed his excitement at concluding his term with such positive news. "I am extremely proud to see the addition of this new facility, which will serve an existing industry that has played a vital role in supporting our town,” said the former mayor. “This marks a high note for my tenure as mayor, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Altavista's growth."

Mayor Reggie Bennett emphasized the significance of the Becknell partnership in shaping the future of Altavista. "As we move forward, we are excited to have Becknell as a partner in our community. Their commitment to growth and economic development aligns perfectly with our vision for Altavista," Bennett said.
 
In 2021, the Town of Altavista acquired the 83-acre parcel for $241,500. This acquisition was made as a strategic move to expand the town's adjacent Dearing Ford Industrial Park. Town Manager Gary Shanaberger emphasized the significance of proactive planning in creating opportunities for the community, saying: "It is essential to invest in our community's future, and the visionary approach taken by our leaders in 2021 has led to an excellent outcome for the Town and its citizens."
